How To Add Extra Pad Eyes

How do you attach extra Pad Eyes to your 'Yak? Well, I've compiled an easy to follow explanation; the pictures should tell the story by themselves. Please note; this article made is made in the way that I have tackled this excercise, anybody else may have their own method. I have gone for the option of screwing the pad eyes into place, based on the fact that the eyes will not be load bearing and only used as rope guides.

I would recommend that if you are considering fixing an item that will be under stress at any time (for instance a rod holder to be used for trolling) that you use stainless steel lock nuts, bolts and washers also use a backing plate to spread the load. Another option is to use rivets but beware that you could pull the rivets through the backing plate depending on the material used. Ok here we go:

1. Decide where you are going to fix your Pad Eye and stick a piece of masking tape roughly in the area. Measure and make your marks.

2. Drill the pilot holes. The drill size only needs to be small, as you will want the screw to bite into the plastic so make sure the bit is smaller than the screw. Apply a good size blob of clear silcon sealant ensuring that you squeeze some into the hole. Some silicon sealants are white but turn clear as they dry as used in the picture.

3. Place your screws into the Pad Eyes and screw into place. Be sure NOT to overtighten.

4. You should now have squeezed a nice amount of silicon out from around the eye.

5. Wet your finger and remove the excess from around the eye.

6. You should now have a nice even bead of silicon around all the edges. JOB DONE.
